US outbreak of parasite causing ‘watery diarrhea’ rises to more than 2,800 cases
Michigan and Ohio are reporting over 2,800 cyclosporiasis cases, a parasitic infection spread through contaminated food. Public health officials attribute investigative delays partly to March 2025 budget cuts totaling $11.4 billion to state and local health departments and July 2025 changes that narrowed a federal food-borne illness monitoring program.
